Confidentiality

Principles of the service

Zenith Neuropsychology adheres to the ethical principles established by the British Psychological Society (BPS), as outlined in their Code of Ethics and Conduct. This Code, developed by the BPS Ethics Committee, provides a framework for ethical decision-making and professional behaviour. It is founded on four core principles: respect, competence, responsibility, and integrity. These principles guide all aspects of our practice, ensuring that services are delivered ethically and professionally.

Confidentiality

At Zenith Neuropsychology, we are committed to maintaining the confidentiality of all client information. This confidentiality is fundamental to the therapeutic relationship and is upheld in accordance with the ethical guidelines of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).

However, there are specific circumstances under which confidentiality may need to be breached, either due to legal obligations or ethical considerations. These include situations where:

  • There is a risk of serious harm to the client or others.
  • Disclosure is required under the Children Act 1989, particularly in cases involving child protection concerns.
  • A court of law issues an order mandating the release of information.
  • There is a threat of terrorism, necessitating disclosure under the Terrorism Act 2000.
  • Information pertains to drug trafficking offences, as outlined in the Drug Trafficking Act 1994.
  • There is a legal requirement to disclose information under the Road Traffic Act 1988.
  • Disclosure is mandated by the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002.

In addition to these legal exceptions, there are professional scenarios where sharing information is considered appropriate and beneficial, such as clinical supervision. To ensure the highest standard of care, psychologists may discuss cases with qualified supervisors to enhance therapeutic effectiveness.

Please be assured that personal information is never shared with third-party organisations for purposes such as sales, marketing, or research. In accordance with data protection laws, clients have the right to access their records and can request corrections to any inaccuracies.

General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)

Zenith Neuropsychology is committed to upholding the highest standards of data protection and confidentiality in accordance with the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR) and the Data Protection Act 2018. Our practices align with the ethical guidelines set forth by the British Psychological Society (BPS).

Confidentiality and Anonymisation

All client records are handled with strict confidentiality. To enhance privacy, each client is assigned a unique reference number. Clinical notes, neuropsychological assessment materials, and questionnaires are anonymised and stored in a locked filing cabinet. Additionally, clinical notes are uploaded to a secure, password-protected online platform, and paper notes are then confidentially shredded.

Retention and Disposal of Records

In line with legal and ethical guidelines, client records are retained for a period of seven years following the conclusion of therapy. After this period, all records are securely and confidentially destroyed. Clients have the right to access their personal records under the UK GDPR. Requests for access should be made in writing, and we will respond within the timeframe stipulated by law.

Zenith Neuropsychology participates in regular professional development and training to remain updated on safeguarding practices and legal obligations. This ensures that we manage all situations with the highest level of care, professionalism, and in accordance with current legislation.
